Holiday Lets and Cottages in the South West of England | Holiday Lets Newquay and Bournemouth

The South West is a vast region of England, also known as ‘The West Country’, ranges from Bristol right the way down to Newquay in Cornwall. Much of the region is located near to Britain’s coast, so the region enjoys spectacular oceanic views. There are some iconic pastimes to be cherished in the South West. For example, Stonehenge in Wiltshire is a prehistoric monument, estimated to be around 4500 years old. It is identifiable throughout the world, and can be visited by the public the whole year round. Yet the history doesn’t stop there. Bath, established by the Romans almost 2000 years ago, has an endless amount of iconic attractions that link the city back to its Roman traditions. Bath combines stunning architecture with historic attractions. Probably the most well-known attraction in Bath is The Roman Baths, where you can admire the ruins and treasures, explore the steaming pool and enjoy re-enactments. Newquay is the surf capital of the UK, with thousands of surfers flocking to Cornwall throughout the year. The coastal town enjoys a dramatic coastline, miles of sandy beaches and a huge variety of pubs and restaurants. However, it isn’t all about sea activities. Cycling and walking are also a big pull for Cornwall, with breathtaking scenery and towering cliffs providing a spectacular backdrop. And it isn’t just us who rave about it, Newquay was recently voted in the UK’s top 10 seaside towns. Similar to Newquay is Bournemouth, which is situated further East, in Dorset. It’s worth exploring the miles of golden beaches and two piers, Boscombe Pier and Bournemouth Pier. Being another coastal town, much of the activities revolve around water. Surfing is also available, but Bournemouth is more renowned for being the creator of the modern beach hut over 100 years ago. There are over 250 available to hire with magnificent views to behold. The most northern part of the region is Gloucestershire, with the most notable locations in the area being Gloucester, Cheltenham and the Cotswolds. Gloucester is a city with docks that have a rich Victorian history, and many of Victorian traits are still there today for tourists. A good trip for all the family is to the city’s Cathedral. Gloucester Cathedral was recreated as ‘Hogwarts’ during Harry Potter films, and can be visited throughout the year for a magic adventure. A trip to Gloucester wouldn’t be complete without sampling some of the local delicatessen, such as the famous Double Gloucester Cheese. If you’re lucky enough to be in the area when there is a meeting at Cheltenham Racecourse then it is a must visit in order to sample the unique atmosphere. Cheltenham is the home of Britain’s jump racing festival, which is held every March. The Cotswolds are a designated area of outstanding beauty, with literally miles upon miles of greenery and hills to be discovered with some of the best views in Britain to go with it. Many of the villages and towns are steeped in history, featuring picturesque buildings and a variety of wildlife. A trip to the West Country wouldn’t be fulfilled without trying some of the region’s cider, commonly known as cider. The area prides itself on the amount of true cider apples that are used in production; therefore it produces a sharper, distinct flavour. Many places will let you sample the cider before making your choice. Beware though- often it is mightily strong! The West Country combines city life and the countryside ambience perfectly. It has its quiet parts, like anywhere, but usually a livelier area is not too far away. The area provides something for everyone, families, couples or groups of friends; The West Country can entertain, intrigue and interest you. Whether it’s an active holiday or a relaxing break, the South West will provide lasting memories at a reasonable price.
