Scotland has natural beauty and picturesque scenery all over the country. Whilst much of the west coast remains barely touched, the east coast is more built up and commercialised, with cities such as Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Dundee, whilst Glasgow more centrally located. However, large areas of the west boast the best of city life and the country, with spectacular scenery always just a short distance away. If you think of the stereotypical connotations of Scotland, you usually would come up with something along the lines of: whisky, bag pipes, tartan kilts, haggis and golf. If this is what you’re after then all these can be easily found in the bigger tourist areas. However, it would be wrong to assume that all of these are typical daily activities for Scottish people. If you travel further afield you will sample something more like the traditional, idealistic Scottish lifestyle. These places can be found all over Scotland, quiet fishing villages that have a great community, amazing landscape and sumptuous home cooked food. Scotland is hugely popular with hikers, many of whom visit Ben Nevis in the Highlands. The Grampian Mountains offer various challenges for hikers, with different levels of experience needed depending on the routes and mountains preferred. There are so many hidden gems in Scotland that it would be unfair to pinpoint some of them. However, with the right research and preparation, parts of Scotland will definitely have what you crave on a trip away. Known as ‘The Home of Golf’, Scotland has over 550 courses to choose from. Prices for a round of golf differ greatly depending on the course, and similar to hiking in Scotland, there are many popular and famous courses whilst hundreds of quiet, more secluded courses that are equally as memorable. Among those most noted are St Andrews, Turnberry, Gleneagles, Muirfield, Royal Troon, Carnoustie and Royal Aberdeen. Wherever you are in Scotland, you can be guaranteed there will be a golf course close by, so again research your areas and courses. Many courses in Scotland are known as links courses, a true test for all golfers! Scotland’s biggest cities have hours of interest and entertainment to be found. . Edinburgh has many attractions, such as The Royal Mile, The Castle and The Edinburgh Dungeon. However, not just Edinburgh is for tourists. Glasgow, Scotland’s biggest city, boasts great architecture and stunning galleries and museums. Aberdeen, known as ‘The Granite City, also boasts some of the most unique architecture in Europe. Another option is Dundee, which is the home of the Discovery, the ship that carried Robert Scott throughout its travels, and is now docked in the city she was built. Whatever you enjoy, Scotland will have it for you. Entertainment, exploring and excitement are all to be had in the UK’s most atmospheric country.
