London is one of the most iconic cities around the world, and is visited throughout the year by millions of tourists from all around the globe. As a capital city, London enjoys all the attractions and amenities that you would expect of a city of such stature. The London Eye is one of the most recognised statures in the world, and is frequently featured on television and films. Situated on the Thames, the London Eye has a number of pods which people can enjoy the view for miles upon miles around London. Another quick way of seeing a lot of London is to get on an open top bus. It is hard to see all of the attractions in such a limited amount of time, so these tours give you a guided tour of all the best attractions. The Houses of Parliament is a unique attraction; after all, it is not often you can visit the hub of one of the most powerful institutions in the world. UK residents can visit for free if they arrange a visit with their local MP, or, alternatively, you can queue during the summer and pay on the day. A trip is probably best planned well in advance, so that you have the opportunity of getting tickets for a live debate. Buckingham Palace is the main residence of the Queen and the Royal Family. During the summer months, the Palace is open to visitors to explore the rooms where some of the most important figures in time have visited and where some of the most important decisions globally have been made. The West End is globally renowned for its theatres and the outstanding shows that it hosts throughout the year. The theatres in the area annually attract over 10 million visitors collectively from all over the world, which backs up the point that it is a must do. To experience historical London, visitors should try and get to the Tower of London. Centuries ago, many people were taken to the Tower to be tortured and executed for crimes they have committed. Nowadays, visitors can enjoy re-enactments, official tours and exhibitions to experience the past. Westminster Abbey is also a great historical attraction, where visitors can develop an understanding of the 700 year history of the building. Museums and galleries are widespread amongst London, many of which have been internationally acclaimed and have won prestigious awards. One of the best galleries is The National Gallery, which has a wonderful, diverse range of artwork which has been gathered from across the world from centuries upon centuries. The most popular and mainstream museum is probably The Imperial War Museum, which also gives a fabulous insight to how life was during both wars, and has in depth information on every war involving Britain from the First World War to the present day. And if there wasn’t enough already there for you to come and visit, the 2012 Olympics have been awarded to London, which is consequently undergoing vast improvements to the infrastructure of the nation’s capital!
