Set over nearly 900 square miles, it includes the Lake District National Park, which is the largest National Park in England and Wales.
There are several iconic features of the Lake District. Windermere is the largest natural lake in England, whilst the Lake District also has Scafell Pike, the biggest mountain in England. However, the Lake District isn’t all about seeing sites, there are an abundance of things to do too.
Walking and cyclist enthusiasts will have the opportunity to explore over 3500 km of roads, tracks and walkways in the area. Adrenaline seekers can participate in water sports and climbing throughout the region. If you prefer something less frenetic, then have a potter around the quiet and quaint villages which the Lakes has plenty of. Areas such as Coniston, Keswick, and Ravenglass have some wonderful art and craft shops along with brilliant tea rooms and cafeterias.
The Lake District also has shows, festivals and events throughout the year, many of which are unique to the Lakes. Highlights coming up before the end of the year include the ‘Beer n Bangers Festival’ in October and the Powerboat Speed Records Week on Coniston in November.
For the food and drink connoisseurs out there, the Lakes have lots of real ale pubs to choose from and local breweries to visit and sample the delights. The pubs all have an atmosphere and characteristics that can only be found in rural Britain. Superb architecture, wood burning fires, and exquisite cuisine are all commonplace in the Lakes. Expect to find lamb, beef, chicken and pork, as well as a huge variety of fish dishes.
The Lakes has offerings for people with all sorts of hobbies and interests. Somewhere in the Lake District, there will undoubtedly be something new to be experienced for everyone.
